SNEAKERS DESIGN SUBMISSION 2017

Late 2016 and earlier this year, I participated in two different pensole sneakers design competitions. I lost the first which was a TV show and the other was a boot camp which I won. I was denied visa though to train as a footwear designer but the experience was an amazing one as I discovered how to render my designs using vector illustrations.

The brief was to design a footwear themed around a fashion designer from the 18th century and other inspirations from my environment.

MY FIRST LOVE

The only reason I wanted to be a graphic designer years ago was to have the ability to design sneakers.

See below my submission for the LaceUp TV Ultimate Sneaker Challenge Suggestion Box Competition by Pensole Academy. I have always wanted to disrupt the adidas Superstar sneakers.

This was designed for Anthony Anderson.

BACKGROUND

Anthony (Tony) Anderson is from Compton, grew up in an era of NWA, gang violence, crime, drive by shootings but still made the SUPERSTAR status against all odds. He is a successful actor, comedian, writer and game show host, popularly known for his role in ABC sitcom Black-ish. He is influenced by two of the greatest Hip-Hop artists of all time; Tupac Shackur and Biggie who are from East Harlem and Brooklyn, New York respectively. Tupac and Biggie were victims of an intercostal rivalry war that led to their deaths and if only they realized they were from the same city, re-invented themselves, ended their rivalry, united and connected more together to influence the next generation of black kids before their deaths, they could still be alive to gift the world with more inspiring sounds of hope like “Keep ya head up” and “Sky’s the limit” unlike the mumble rap that is out there these days. Anthony’s success story shows hard work, patience, re-invention, perseverance and consistency overtime.

WHAT ANTHONY NEEDS: Anthony is a sneakerhead who wants a custom-made, classy and stylish superstar sneakers he could rock on the streets and the white house at the same time without socks.

Mediocrity Is Good

My hatred for mediocrity presented with all kinds of fluffiness and sweetened tongues is what informs the output of my works but I did not become 'pro' overnight.

I own up when I don't know jack and I appreciate it when people do the same. About 7 years ago, I practically knew nothing about photoshop but I knew how to use corel draw (self taught) and I did some mediocre designs with it like the one above. I wasn't really satisfied with what I was doing so I decided to learn when I got the slightest chance to do so (even if it is from someone that is way younger than I am).

Immediately I finished NYSC in 2009, my father and my elder brother gave me twenty five thousand naira each to go for a graphics design training, and I trained for two months after which I began to use and enjoy photoshop which I dreaded initially. I really had a great time (I still do) learning how to use photoshop tools as I was eager to express my art(s) using the application. I did a lot of jobs for free during that era, trying my hands on so many tricks.

I took some of these works for an interview at an Noah's Ark, through my great uncle and miraculously I got my first job as an art director (Thanks to Lanre Adisa for giving me a shot). Anyway(s), it would be 4 years in June since I entered the industry and www.behance.net/lexain would show you how well I have improved by not forming "I sabi" (I know) but learning under the masters, rookies and asking a lot of questions. I am still work in progress though, but at least I "sabi" wetin I dey do.
